Introduction to Figure Painting
March 8th - May 10th
Tuesdays 5:30-8:30 pm
Work from a live model on an extended figure painting project.
This class is both a figure painting class and a figure drawing class. Accurate drawing is an essential part of the painting process. We will be working in the method of sight size, a traditional drawing and painting technique dating back to the time of the spanish court painter Velazquez. This will allow us to make very accurate measurements of the model from life. We will also be going over some structural anatomy and identifying anatomical landmarks that will help us to create a balanced figure with an accurate body type and gesture.
The class will also go over how to accurately identify, organize and mix flesh tones as well has how to KEY a painting effectively to create an accurate value scale and light effect. Students will work from live models every day and benefit form live painting demos, lectures, and personalized critiques. We will work, step by step, through the process of making a classical figure painting from life. All ages and skill levels are welcome to join this class. The structure of the course allows for a large amount of one-on-one instruction, insuring that students of every level are given the guidance they need to push their artwork to the next level.
