PAINTING MATERIALS
Brushes: assorted sizes of filbert (a shape of brush) brushes, from very small to about an inch wide. “Signet” is a good brush brand. You want oil painting brushes rather than watercolor brushes. Oil painting brushes are stiffer. Unfortunately the “sizes” of brushes labeling system varies from brand to brand. I would go with 4 or 5 brushes from about 1/4 inch wide to one inch wide. As well as a “round” brush (very pointy and symmetrical from all angles) that is very small for lines and details.
Pallet knife: Pallet knife shapes are a matter of personal preference for each artist. I prefer one with a long rectangular blade (about 3 or 4 inches), which allows me to move more paint quickly and efficiently.
Pallet: The bigger the better. Wood is best, followed by glass, then plastic, then paper. In my opinion, ZAFA makes the best wooden pallets. To inquire about purchasing a ZAFA pallet, e-mail ZAFA at info@ZwickAcademyOfFineArt.com
Medium cup: This is a small glass or metal jar or container for holding painting medium for use while painting.
Painting panel: Canvas panel to paint on. These are thin canvases to paint on that are backed with cardboard rather than wooden stretcher-bars. I am not sure how many we will need yet. Start with 3 for the first weekend. 8x10 inches is a good size to start.
Turpenoid: Odorless paint solvent similar to turpentine. Use for cleaning brushes as well as used to mix painting medium. Do not buy “natural turpenoid” with the green label. Instead buy the regular turpenoid with the blue label.
Refined linseed oil: Used for painting medium. It is important you use “refined” linseed oil and not cold press linseed oil or stand oil. The drying times and quality very between these different types.
Plein air easel: Each student will need to bring their own easel. Pein air easels come in a wide variety of types and price ranges. A standard “french easel” plein air easel would work fine.
Paper towels: Students will need to bring their own paper towels.
Comfortable shoes: We are going to be standing a lot while painting
Some kind of sun hat: Standard attire for a plein air artist is some kind of hat to keep the sun out of their eyes as well as to minimize sunburn.
Sun screen. Try to avoid getting sunburned.
PAINT
There are many oil paint brands to choose from, with a wide range in prices. “Winton” brand paint would work fine for this class. Sometimes people ask for a recommendation for high end paint. If you are interested in a more high quality paint, I would recommend “Michael Harding” or “Old Holland”.
