Plein air landscape painting

ZAFA is proud to offer this new and exciting workshop. Landscape painting has been a favorite activity of artist throughout history. Sense the invention of tubed paints, painting on location has been a staple of an artist’s portfolio.

We are fortunate enough to live in one of the most beautiful places in the country. In this workshop we will be going to various locations in Honolulu, Kailua, Hawaii Kai, and Kaneohe to paint nature from life.

This class is not only focused on helping artist produce beautiful works of art during the workshop, but also to give each artist the knowledge and tools need to go out on their own and make successful paintings after the workshop is over.

What students will learn in this workshop.

-Materials and techniques.

We will be talking about the materials and techniques best suited to this style of painting. From which colors to use, to mediums, brushes, canvases… etc. We will also be talking about how to choose a place to set up and how to orient your easel.

-Composition and how to do composition studies.

We will discuss how to compose a scene. This includes the fundamentals of how compositions direct the viewers eye, as well as different common composition templates. Students will learn how to create and use composition studies as part of their artistic process in developing a more effective landscape painting.

-Values and value studies.

We will be talking about values, value organization, and how to utilize values within compositions. Values are extremely important when trying to create a visually striking image with both a sense of form, depth, and light effect.

-Color studies.

Similar to values studies, students will learn about color studies and how to use them to better plan out a project.

- An overview of color mixing with both a limited and full palette.

In this workshop we will be working first in black and white, then in a limited color palette, then a full color pallet. Students will be guided step by step through the challenges of color mixing and palette organization.

-Plein air landscape painting process and technique.

We will talk about an efficient method of approach to landscape painting that ensures a full value range and accurate depiction of distance and depth in one’s painting. We will also talk about specific problems that plain air artist encounter and how to overcome them. Such as trees silhouetted against the sky and the colors of shadows.

We will go over some useful ways to capture linear perspective as well as discuss what atmospheric perspective is and how it effects color and value.

I hope you have a chance to join us for this fun and exciting workshop!

All skill levels are welcome to join this class. That being said, it may be beneficial to already have some experience with oil painting prior to the class. If you are not confident, I recomend first taking the introduction to oil painting workshop ZAFA offers.

The structure of the course allows for a large amount of one-on-one instruction, insuring that students of every level are given the guidance they need to push their artwork to the next level.

This class I taught though lectures, live demos, individualized critiques, handouts and working alongside the instructor on each project.

I hope you can join us.
