The Oil Painter's Studio: Materials & Techniques
Oil painting is much more than simply putting paint on a canvas. Every finished painting is supported by countless decisions about materials, tools, and technique. The surfaces we paint on, the brushes we choose, the mediums we use, and even the way we organize our palette all influence the final result. These practical skills are often learned through years of trial and error, yet they form the foundation of every successful painting practice.
This workshop is designed to demystify the materials and techniques of classical oil painting through a series of engaging demonstrations and hands-on projects. Students will stretch their own canvases, prepare professional-quality painting panels from inexpensive materials, compare the behavior of a variety of oil painting mediums, mix their own tube of oil paint from pigment and binder, and create reference charts exploring transparency, drying times, glazing techniques, and alla prima painting. Along the way, we will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of different painting supports, brushes, pigments, varnishes, studio equipment, and palette organization, as well as practical topics such as brush care, palette maintenance, photographing artwork, wiring finished paintings, and presenting work professionally.
By the end of the workshop, each student will leave with a collection of reference samples, and practical resources, including a stretched canvas, a prepared painting panel, a homemade tube of oil paint, medium comparison charts, glazing and alla prima studies, and a deeper understanding of the materials that make oil painting possible. Whether you are just beginning your journey or have years of painting experience, this workshop will provide practical knowledge and studio techniques that will continue to benefit your work for years to come.
