Master Copy Painting: John Singer Sargent

Copying the works of master painters is a time-honored tradition and one of the most effective ways to develop one's painting skills.

When attempting to reproduce a masterwork, we are challenged to look beyond the beauty of the finished painting and examine how it was created. We begin to decipher the decisions the artist made: how complex forms were simplified, how colors and values were organized, where details were emphasized or omitted, and how individual brushstrokes contributed to the overall effect.

Through this process, we gain a glimpse into the world through the eyes of a master painter. By studying their methods and decisions, we develop a deeper understanding of the painting process and discover techniques and principles that we can apply to our own work from nature.

In this workshop, we will be studying John Singer Sargent, one of the most celebrated portrait painters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Renowned for his extraordinary draftsmanship, confident brushwork, and remarkable ability to capture light and life, Sargent offers an invaluable opportunity to study the art of portrait painting.

Why Study Sargent?

There are several reasons Sargent's work is particularly well suited to the master copy process.

First, Sargent was primarily a direct painter. Rather than building his paintings through numerous transparent layers, he often mixed his colors and applied them directly to the canvas with deliberate, confident brushstrokes. This makes his work especially instructive to study, as we can observe individual brushstrokes, analyze color relationships, and attempt to reconstruct the mixtures and techniques he employed.

By contrast, painters who relied heavily on indirect methods, such as Rembrandt, often developed their paintings through complex combinations of glazing, scumbling, opaque passages, and painting mediums. These layered processes can make it considerably more difficult to decipher how the final image was achieved.

Second, Sargent's painting methods are unusually well documented. Through accounts from his students and contemporaries, we have valuable insights into his working methods, artistic philosophy, and approach to portraiture. These records allow us to go beyond simply copying the appearance of his paintings and attempt to reconstruct the process by which they were created.

Finally, Sargent was an extraordinary painter and draftsman. His ability to convey form, light, atmosphere, and character with seemingly effortless brushwork makes his paintings endlessly rewarding to study. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced painter, there is much to be learned from examining his work.
